How to count words and characters online

  1. Type directly into the box above, or paste text from any document.

  3. Use Copy text to grab your text, or Clear to start over.

Why use a word counter?

Whether you're writing a meta description, a tweet, an essay, or a college application, hitting an exact word or character limit matters. A live word counter shows you instantly how close you are to the target, so you can trim or expand without copy-pasting into a bloated editor. Counting characters with and without spaces helps with strict form limits, while the reading-time estimate tells you roughly how long your audience will spend. Because everything runs in your browser, even confidential drafts stay completely private on your own device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free and private?
Yes — it is 100% free with no sign-up, and completely private. Your text is counted entirely in your browser as you type; nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
How are words counted?
Words are counted by splitting your text on whitespace (spaces, tabs and line breaks) and counting the non-empty chunks, so it matches the count you would expect from a typical word processor.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
"Characters (with spaces)" counts every character you type, including spaces and line breaks. "Characters (no spaces)" ignores all whitespace, which is handy for limits that exclude spaces.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is estimated at an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, then rounded up to the nearest minute so even short snippets show at least one minute.
